Info In Excess

In the depths of weekend boredom, I was struck with a bit of inspiration and decided to set up my online dating profile. I wasn't actually ready to start dating, mind you, I just wanted to think of a profile name, and set up my OkCupid once again, without pictures, since I was waiting until I dye my hair.

(I do think I'll try Match too in the future, but can't hurt to use the free one as well, right? Double dipping ain't illegal.)

A Weight Watchers friend helped me come up with a cute, fun profile name, then I took to answering their standard questions, which haven't changed since the first time I explored the site, oh, seven years ago or so? God.

In the past, I think I was so desperate to show personality, to show that I had one, that I couldn't stop myself from throwing everything and the kitchen sink into my profile.

"Joke! Joke! Joke!" I'd start out, before listing what I though were my best qualities and funniest worst ones. Then, "Look at all these good movies I like!" I'd brag. "And all this awesome music I listen to! And food! Joke! Joke! DON'T YOU WANT TO FUCK ME?!"

It would turn out that my profile was, well, long.

This time, though, I'm trying to keep myself in check. Because I think a too-long profile communicates one of three things:

1) You're very insecure and want to be validated.

2) You're very egotistical and want to be validated.

3) You have way too much time on your hands.

I would say numbers 1 and 3 are fairly accurate, and I don't really want to advertise them right off the bat, do I? No.

So, over the weekend I answered the questions, and messed about, and creeped on my girlfriends who have profiles. First I had what I thought was a sassy little profile, then I decided to some editing 'cause, well, some of the words might have been too big.

Then I pondered just how self-deprecating I should get, and how confident I want to seem, and what's too much Taylor and what's not enough. Basically, how much of my nonsense do I unleash?

Then I contemplated how honest I want to be about what I'm looking for. And then I decided, not very. Why take it too seriously?

And then today came. And I was going to deactivate my profile, and let it go to sleep for a couple of months, but honestly...I'm a little bored.

A little lonely.

A little...antsy.

So I put up a few pictures. Just for fun.

Let's see how this goes.

Fail Blog

I guess today is just "let's talk about Taylor's fails" day, as we have another one to discuss! (Also, apparently, gif day, but isn't every day?) If you've noticed, I have blogged at night this week. And that's because my laptop has come home with me...every night.

Every. Single. Night.

At least I haven't turned on my television AT ALL.

I have the willpower of a drunk starving dieter at a buffet. Or a sex-deprived single girl in front of Michael Fassbender.

Or myself.

Faaaaail.

In related news, Screen Free Week starts on April 29th! Are you participating? I'm participating. No, really. NO REALLY.

How so?

1) Leave my computer at home every weeknight...AND ALL WEEKEND. WHAT?!?!?!?! (This means I will pre-schedule posts, I guess...ohmygod what will I do with mysellllllf?)

2) Try my darnedest not to play with my phone as much. While waiting in line, while bored. I actually forgot it in the car today and never went out to get it. Wasn't the end of the world. Not like anyone who needs me can't reach me through email.

3) Continue not watching TV. Which means I should PROBABLY catch up on my shows before Monday...

4) Take a morning and afternoon break and a lunch every day at work so I get screen breaks. 15 minutes AM and PM, an hour lunch.

5) READ, MOTHERFUCKER.

How about you, any screen-free plans for next week? OR ARE YOU A FAILURE TOO?

Fuckin' Friday Links

(WARNING: NSFW LANGUAGE)

My mom and I have been having an ongoing debate lately about naughty language. Basically, she haaates it. She finds it déclassé and trashy and it hurts her ears. There's nothing that offends her more. Me, you know...I swear. Lots.

We are at an impasse.

I think this is why she doesn't really read my blog, unless prompted. Which is fine.

Let's have some links.

The Only Thing You Need To Read To Get Ready For Bikini Season

Brilliant.

The Most Deranged Sorority Girl Email You Will Ever Read

THIS BITCH BE CRAAAAAAY. I love it. I've always wondered what it would be like to be in a sorority and my guess is, exactly like this.

Clarissa Darling Vs. Sabrina Spellman: Who Comes Out On Top?

I'm going to need to figure out a way to rewatch Clarissa, it has been way too long.

Yes. Everyone should read this today.

I...I what? WHAT?! I don't even. That's sick.

emily is a 2013 boston marathon runner with a medal

I haven't said anything about the Boston bombings because, honestly, I haven't had the words. And mentioning it at the end of a silly links post seems disrespectful somehow, and at the same time trying to devote a whole post to it when I know I can't give it the weight or thought it deserves seems more offensive. Usually, I'm oddly, morbidly fascinated with tragedy, tales of grief. With Newtown, I read the news articles, absorbed the details, full of disgust for myself, but with this tragedy and the aftermath I just...I just can't yet.

So I will just link you to this wonderful post from a runner in the marathon who couldn't finish, and I will leave it at that, with a final statement of love for my country, if that was ever in doubt, and a video.

In a complete 180 from the first one, please enjoy this, which might make you cry.

Dating Pre-Season

I've been itching to date lately. I miss boys. And we know Bentley misses boys. Or you know, men, I guess, now that I'm a quarter of a century old I should probably start dating dudes with chest hair and 401ks, isn't that what we decided?

I'm not sure I'm ready yet, though.

What I learned post-Ginger and through my dating in 2012 is that when I'm interested in a guy, I wrap up way too much of my self-worth in their opinion of me. I'm quite the cliche like that. And when they reject me, as they inevitably do because statistically it's gonna happen, I'm crushed and then my confidence plummets and I eat. Which is just, again, straight out of some pathetic after school special. Must I be so Tori Spelling?

And too, when I would go dates, I would always be so consumed with whether or not the guy liked me, how did I look, was I being funny enough, did I have enough good stories to tell, putting on a performance---of course, this is all part of dating, but I would care way too much if I was impressing a guy even if I had no interest in him.

But, I've been working so hard on that. I really do feel like I'm at the point where I'm ready to look for someone that I'm interested in, and not just ready to seek out the attention of anyone that would have me.

Another thing that held me back from dating the past few months was the fact that I didn't enjoy the element of the "getting to know you" stage where you talk about, you know, your lives, and all I had to say was, "I kind of hate mine, and my job, and all that makes me happy is my cat, and eating." Who wants to spend time with that ball of sunshine?

But two things:

1) I've changed the way I talk about myself, and am trying to be less of a Negative Nancy.
2) I've changed my life, and have different things to talk about. Let's imagine for a second how much attention my profile will get with "yoga teacher in training" on there. HEYO!

Anyway.

Maybe I'm moving towards being ready to date again. I mean, I am content on my own, which was part of this whole endeavor. I know how to be single and happy as an individual. Or as part of a female/feline pair, as it were. And I'm focusing on my own issues, what I need and what I want. And that can continue, even if I am dating.

But another thing I worry about is that dating is going to distract me from this healthy lifestyle. I know, I know, you can't put your life on hold to lose weight, but I also don't want to throw myself out of my comfort zone all willy-nilly.

But like, use it or lose it, you know?

GAH.

I've said it before and I'll say it again now, I don't need an insta-relationship or someone to call my boyfriend or even someone to date longer than a couple of weeks. I just want to get out there, have some fun, meet some people and maybe make a connection that I've been missing for a really long time.

But not yet.

Soon. Not yet.

WW Recap 3/22-3/28: Half Win

I confess to being a cocky little narcissist this week.

I felt so good, and I really did think I looked so different, all in the facial region. And my ass. I'd get out of the shower and be all...

And I was like , "Daaamn, girl, you're totes gonna lose, like, SIX POUNDS THIS WEEK. Fosho."

Greedy bitch.

But I did lose 1.4 pounds, hitting my next goal right on the nose and earning my new yoga towel (which I ordered early, on Wednesday, so cocky was I). So yay!

Goooals?

1) Go to yoga four times. (Three. A bowl of soup, two hot hot classes. Was going to go to restorative last night with my fave teacher, but there was a sub, so I practiced at home. I don't feel bad about it. Also, two walks! And I already went to 6AM yoga today. So really, I have NO REGRETS.)
2) Read another book. (Half. In the middle of Gone Girl, it's good!)
3) Knit something. (Half of something. Look!)

4) Eat my activity points the day I earn them. (Yes! Also some weekly points, though, but I guess my goal didn't say I couldn't, so...)
5) Leave the office for lunch every day. (Yes! Home, home, DMV, grocery store, Target!)

Goooals!

1) Go to yoga four times. (Maybe five.)
2) Keep reading. (This is just like...a perma goal.)
3) Knit my other wrist warmer.
4) Don't get any take out. (This does not include dining out with friends, that is allowed.)
5) Get my blog draft folder under 25.

A Final Dose of Oscar Linkage

Okay, after this, I swear I'm done.

Maybe.

First, see my Jennifer get swarmed by her family after winning. So cute!

Now let's deal with some of the darker Oscar links.

Very interesting. I'm not sure I thoroughly agree with all the backlash but I do understand it. I definitely had my moments of "oh come ON!" during the broadcast, but knowing MacFarlane's humor I honestly expected it to be worse. One thing I didn't pick up on that someone pointed out to me was the fact that a lot of the scenes in the movies listed in the "We Saw Your Boobs" songs were, you know rape scenes. OH DEAR. 'Cause, yeah, let's totally point out how we saw dem famous actresses' tittays while they were being violated on screen 'cause that's hilaaaarious. Sigh. I mean, yes some of his schtick is satire, but it's such a fine line and when so much of your humor is anti-woman...yeah. I dunno. And yes, I feel dirty, dirty shame over finding him attractive, still. SHAME.

Quvenzhané Wallis, the C Word, and Our Loss of Innocence

This whole thing, just...ugh. She's NINE YEARS OLD, people. Do you remember what you were like when you were nine? Q has an amazing personality, tons of spunk and wit and charm, confidence and charisma and talent in spades, and people are trying to bring her down. I get the satirical intent by the Onion, but of course they took it way too far, because she's NINE. But what makes me sad is that there are plenty of people out there who would have made that comment without a trace of sarcasm. People are seriously chastising her for "showing her guns" when she was announced as a nominee when that was FROM THE FREAKING MOVIE, because people are awful. Look at the comments on that second link. UGH.

To end this on a brighter note, check out GoFugYourself and Tom and Lorenzo for some fashion commentary.

And let's watch Jennifer win and be adorable and gracious and charming and try to forget how people suck.

A Weight PSA

There's something so nifty about technology.

Through the wonders of my blog's stats, I can track how people find my blog. Like, apparently someone found it the other day by Googling "how do I get rid of penis envy", which is hilarious.

But last night, someone using their Android phone, on a Verizon network, (I KNOW SO SPECIFIC BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING), searched "jlaw weight". Apparently I show up on the first page.

...really? REALLY?

Of course, this outrage is hypocrisy spewing out of my big ole booty (ew?),'cause I untaped my elephant and weighed myself today.

Shh. It made me very happy.

EVEN THOUGH THE NUMBER IS IRRELEPHANT.

Jennifer Lawrence Gave The Middle Finger To The Press Room

OH MY GOD I LOVE HER SO MUCH.

Congratulations to my J.Law!

My Jennifer Lawrence won Best Actress at the Academy Awards!

1) I love that she fell up the stairs. I would totally do that. I bet she is mortified. WHATEVER YOU'RE AN OSCAR WINNER!

2) She looked beautiful.

3) She was so genuinely overwhelmed.

I am going to go see Silver Linings Playbook again next weekend. I think the second time around I will really connect with it more, and it will be great to see it without such high expectations.

CONGRATS TO MY FUTURE BEST BUD.

Tribute for a Tribute

One part of Saturday night's Jennifer Lawrence tribute was truly beautiful, to balance out all the less beautiful moments that made me want to hide my face in my hands. At the beginning of every film festival award event, the recipient sits in the audience while someone talks about them favorably (and in this case, so awkwardly) and a video montage plays showing their previous work. Jennifer's was absolutely wonderful and a great demonstration of just how expressive and incredible an actress she really is.

Of course, I've been doing some Googling, as that's what I do, and everyone else on the Internet agrees with me that Saturday night was a disaster, a train wreck, a horrifying display of unprofessional fuckery. The Santa Barbara Independent article was a little diplomatic and seemed to lay some blame on J.Law, which is patently false, but the comments are vicious and I'm enjoying posting some myself. This Hunger Games site The Hob has lots of videos of the interview so you can see for yourself I'm not exaggerating one bit about how uncomfortable the whole thing was. They mentioned something I forgot to bitch about in my post, clearly Roger Durling hasn't actually SEEN The Hunger Games as he referred to Gale as Katniss's "boyfriend". WRONG. This Yahoo article is the most kind, and really, "fawning" and "inarticulate" are about as good as it gets.

If I ever do run into her on the street, in a bar, stalking her outside her apartment, the first thing I will do is say, "I was at the Santa Barbara Film Festival...sorry about that."

SBIFF Outstanding Performance of the Year

Dear Jennifer Lawrence,

On behalf of the City of Santa Barbara, I apologize.

There were thousands of us waiting outside the Arlington Theater for you, many with tickets and many without, all buzzing with electric energy at the prospect of seeing your amazing self. The idea of it turned this nearly twenty five year old into a literal squealing fan girl. I screamed for you, oh yes I did.

You're back there somewhere.
I love that you admitted
taking a pic of this sign too.

You looked so beautiful in person, that isn't even in question. But I know the night was probably not what you had imagined, and for that, I am sorry. Considering after the first five minutes I had to take a gazillion pictures trying to just get one of you smiling (unless you were laughing uncomfortably), I imagine you didn't enjoy yourself very much.

Just the other night, my parents and I discussed how, in years past, too many of the Santa Barbara Film Festival events have been moderated by the executive director of the festival, Roger Durling. By all appearances the man is good at most parts of his job, as SBIFF gets great guests every year and is truly a blast to attend (though somewhat poorly organized), but the man should never, ever, ever allowed to speak in public, nor should he ever be allowed to interview anyone. But this year, he seemed to have taken a step back, and had yet to step out on stage at any of the events any of us had attended. And for that, we were incredibly grateful. I cannot even tell you how many times in the past he has essentially ruined events we've gone to.

And then...last night. When the evening started, and the announcer said, "Please welcome your moderater, Roger Durling," I'm telling you Jennifer, my heart kind of fucking broke. I went from being completely excited  and exhilarated to one hundred percent disappointed. And I think you'll agree with me, I was right to feel that way.

So I am truly, truly sorry for the incredible awkwardness you endured last night at the hands of Mr. Durling. We all are. The entire audience was talking about just how awful it was as we poured out into the streets. I honestly over-reacted a bit after the event was over, bitching and moaning the loudest of all of them, because I was so sad at how the whole thing had panned out. You clearly didn't enjoy yourself. I barely enjoyed myself. You'll leave with a horrible opinion of this town and this festival, and that just sucks.

I mean, come on. The night began like this:

"You did a lot of theater growing up---"
"No...I'm sorry, but no. This is really awkward, but no."

Seriously, Roger Durling? You do 10 minutes of Wikipedia research instead of actually making sure you know something about the twice Academy Award-nominated actress you're interviewing? For shame.

I mean, you had a few opportunities to show your charm, and make the 2200 person audience laugh. And we were ripe for it, we all loved you so much. But Roger barely gave you an opportunity, since most of the night went like this:

"What was it like to work with that director? And that one? And that one?"

"And what was that like? How was that? Did you enjoy that?"

"You're so great."
"Thank you."

"You show a lot of emotion when you act."
"...thank you?"

"Here's a clip!"

I think your faces say it all.

But okay, it wasn't all bad. I had to note down a few times you were just too adorable. But here's the thing: adorable is your natural state, non? I mean, it's like it bubbles out of you without your consent. Within five minutes of sitting down you'd tossed the decorative pillows aside and said, "It's hard to be comfortable and look cute in front of 2,000 people. I could take off my pants. I'm not going to take off my pants. Forget I said that."

Later, Roger brought up that you are now the role model to millions of young girls because of The Hunger Games. I'm not even sure if he phrased it as a question, which was seriously the worst, he'd yammer on for awhile then there'd be this pause and you'd realize he finally wanted you to talk. Anyway, you said something like, "I do like being a role model. And it's good I don't have a secret life or anything, 'cause that would be awkward." And also about The Hunger Games, you mentioned struggling with deciding whether or not to take the role because up until that point you had only done small indie projects, and your mother said you were a hypocrite, because you always said you didn't pick your projects based on the size of the studio or the money but the story and character, but now you were maybe rejecting a story and character you loved because it was TOO big. I thought that was awesome.

My favorite bit of the night was when you were talking about how you don't learn your lines in advance, usually learning them the day you shoot your scenes. "It started because I was lazy..." I knew we were soul sisters! And too, I loved what you said about how everyone has a different gift or talent, and jokingly, "fortunately mine is very lucrative".

Another good part of the night was David O Russell giving his speech at the end and presenting you with your award. I loved his Robert De Niro story, which is impossible to translate via text.

Oh, yeah, and one more great part of the night, but more in a schadenfreude way. Roger Durling misinterpreted one of your awkward "thank yous" to one of his random rambles as being uncomfortable with compliments, and then said, "You know, I'm uncomfortable getting compliments too..." and the group of women behind us just BURST out laughing, like that was just about the most outrageous possibility. So good.

Seriously, there could not be a single person sitting in that audience who thought the evening went well and I can only hope the Board of Directors of the film festival never, ever let him do an interview ever again after what he put you through.

Of course, yes, I had fun. It was great to see you in person, and I've been looking forward to it for weeks, months. But it was definitely not all I had hoped it would be, probably not all you hoped it would be, and definitely not all it COULD have been with a different interviewer on board, like Dave Karger from the Virtuoso Awards last week, who was fantastic.

Again, I just want to say I'm sorry. I was really truly sad when the night was over, and I'm not sure why. It's silly to say I was crushed, but I was. I don't know you, this night was not my fault, and you probably didn't give a fuck that it was so damn terrible. My mom said it's because I over-identify with you. Probably.

Obviously, I still adore you. I still hope to run into you sometime and save you from the paparazzi and become BFFs. We'll see.

Until then, I hope your next interview is far less awkward.

Love,
Taylor

Lopsided Love

I am currently sitting in the Arlington Theater in Santa Barbara, watching this gorgeous creature.

Here, have the next best thing.

Weekend Happenings

Ahhh, weekend. I wait for you for days, counting the hours seconds minutes, and then when you arrive I barely know what to do with you.

That's half a lie. Sometimes, I don't know what to do with you, and I spend all day in bed, and it is glorious. But this time, yes, I have plans.

Of course you want to hear them!

First up is lunch with the parental duo at one of my favorite healthy spots in Santa Barbara, Silvergreens. I'm thinking I'll stray away from my usual shrimp, avocado and goat cheese salad and maybe get the ahi tuna one. I KNOW. So wild and crazy.

After lunch, Mama and I are going to the SBIFF Women's Panel, which is made up of, you guessed it, women in the entertainment business. They haven't released the speakers in advance but word on the street is that it's a great line up this year, so I'm looking forward to it.

Then I will force my father to help me do my taxes, cause I am tragically poor and I want my refund, dammit.

Then, more food, because that's what I center my life around. We're meeting up with a friend of my mother's for dinner at Carlito's, a Mexican place near the theater, before the award presentation for Jennifer Lawrence.

YAYYYY!!!!

I have a couple of little posts scheduled for you throughout the day, but I'll be back tomorrow with recaps of today's awesome goings-ons! Hopefully I'll have news of me and J.Law's new BFF-dom.

Oh, and after the event I will go hang out with my actual BFF. Hopefully she won't be insulted that I tried to replace her.

SBIFF Virtuoso Awards 2013

There are a lot of things to love about Santa Barbara. Even if you take the weather, the views, and that sparkling blue ocean off the table, it's still a pretty darn awesome place for more reasons than I can list. But one of them is that, as smaller towns often do, SB has a bunch of annual celebrations like Solstice or Fiesta, which of course all the locals complain about.

But not meeeee. I like festivals. I love the energy and excitement. And, you know, I don't live there, so they don't affect my daily life. And I especially like Santa Barbara's International Film Festival, which began last week and is celebrating its 28th year.

Since I first moved to SB when I was 15, I've done something for the film festival almost every year. My first year, I waited on the red carpet and shook Leonardo DiCaprio's hand and got him to sign my program, and I attended Kevin Bacon's afterparty where he winked at me, giving me something I brag about to this day. A couple of years ago my parents actually won platinum passes to the festival, which get you into every event and party for an exorbitant amount of money. That was good times.

This year, there were only a few events that I really wanted to attend, the first of which was last night. Yes, I left work at lunch, drove up to SB for dinner and a show, then drove back, crawling into bed with Tree at midnight.

Worth it!

The event was the Virtuoso Awards, which honors the year's "standout" performances. The honorees were Ann Dowd from Compliance, Elle Fanning from Ginger & Rosa, Ezra Miller from The Perks of Being A Wallflower, Eddie Redmayne from Les Miserables, Omar Sy from The Intouchables, and Quvenzhane Wallis from Beasts of the Southern Wild.

I've attended this event in the past, and this was the best one by far. Every single one of the guests was clearly thrilled to be there, funny and charming, and my mama and I were thoroughly entertained.

Ann Dowd was incredibly hilarious and self-deprecating, as the oldest honoree she mercilessly teased the host for commenting on her "toiling for decades" before getting this sort of recognition. The film looks disturbing and fascinating, and I definitely plan to see it.

Elle Fanning was adorable and sweet, and I was seriously stunned by the clip they showed from her film. She is insanely talented. Funny, I was standing at will call when a car pulled up behind me and I glance over my shoulder and see blonde hair and think, "Who is this bitch getting her car to go around the barricade? Rude." Oh, whoops, that's Elle Fanning...

Ezra Miller was pretty darn funny too, and I was expecting to be irritated by him. Based on what I've heard/read he is a very smart young man who knows he's very smart and takes every opportunity to be pretentious. But on stage he was personable and clever. He made a funny joke about how Omar and Eddie have sexier voices than he does. I still really want to see The Perks of Being A Wallflower, I read the book when I was younger and loved it.

Eddie Redmayne earned himself a place on my fuckable list. I'm sure he's more excited about that honor than the one he was receiving. He sat on his feet, just like I do, which instantly endeared him to me, and he was just sweet and witty in that ever so British way. Waaant.

Omar Sy was the main reason I wanted to attend this event. He was absolutely amazing in that incredible film, and I was so happy that he was being recognized for it. He was clearly thrilled to be there, and while his English isn't perfect he managed to crack a few great jokes. Gorgeous, gorgeous man.

As great as all the other guests were during their one-on-one interviews, Quvenzhane Wallis absolutely stole the show. Nine years old, with  more sass and personality in her pinkie than I have in my whole body. I wish I had written down half the things she said, she was just a riot. Adorable. I wanted to put her in my pocket.

 So. Much. Fun.

I was supposed to go to Leonardo DiCaprio (again!) on Friday, but the jerk cancelled. So I will be attending the Women's Panel on Saturday, then Jennifer Lawrence on Saturday night.

Yeah, you heard me. My girl crush. WOOHOOOOOO!!!!!!
